Russell Watson reveals ‘miraculous’ good health news
World-renowned tenor Russell Watson – who has recovered from two brain tumours – has revealed miraculous news about his health.
Russell made the announcement exclusively on last night’s The One Show on BBC One.
He revealed his pituitary gland which was thought to have been irreparably damaged by the cancers has made an almost complete recovery.
He told hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp: “Basically, I have to take steroids to stay alive, so I did a bit of research, rang my endocrinologist, and told them I was really struggling with keeping weight off, and is there a test I can do to find out whether I am taking too much of the steroids.
“In a nutshell, she rang me up and said that this is like a one-in-a-million chance, but you have started to produce your own cortisol, which is the body’s stress hormones… So I’ve cut my steroids in half, I went back for another test this week, and I have been told I can cut those in half… it may end up, at the end of it, that I might not need to take the steroids anymore.”
He added: “I am really pleased. Some good health news; it’s about time!”
The 59-year-old was also on The One Show to launch his new book – his most personal work yet.
The Voice is an unfiltered memoir charting his extraordinary journey from working men’s clubs in Salford, Manchester, to the world’s most celebrated stages.
On The One Show, he mentioned some of the stories in the book, including working with ABBA, and getting to meet Hollywood royalty Meryl Streep.
It compliments Russell’s new intimate tour which kicks off in September, and takes in theatres across
The book pulls back the curtain on the man behind one of the most recognisable voices in modern classical crossover music. With trademark warmth, humour, and honesty, Russell recounts a career built on grit and relentless belief — from singing for custard creams and battling debt in the unforgiving northern club circuit, to stunning audiences worldwide with an operatic power few saw coming.
The Voice doesn’t shy away from the darker chapters either. Russell opens up about crushing setbacks, brushes with failure, and a life-threatening illness that nearly silenced him for good — while never losing the grounded, down-to-earth spirit that has endeared him to fans for over two decades.
It features a bookplate personally signed by Russell, and exclusive four-track CD, unavailable elsewhere.
